Life gets complicated. That’s a fact! From buying groceries, paying bills, to hectic schedules and taking care of our families, we often strive to be perfect, and in doing so we risk burning ourselves out with worry and stress. Does life really have to be so crazy?
Recently I ran into an old friend who I hadn’t seen in a long while, and I had always had the impression that her world was perfect. She was one of those women who always looks “well put together” with great clothes and makeup. Her social media showed an endless array of perfect photos at exotic locations and expensive restaurants. I ran into her at the supermarket on a last minute dash to buy flour, me with no make up, wrinkles and a fake smile wishing I had taken the time to comb my hair.
We stood chatting and I was actually shocked to hear her open up about her world. It was not perfect at all. It got me thinking about how stressful it must be for her to always present the perfect face, plus how brave she was to open up and show vulnerability. I admired her more for her honestly than for the perfection she was striving to achieve.
It got me thinking that being imperfect is more than ok, and it’s good to lighten up about our imperfections. It is what makes us human. Set realistic goals but don’t be so hard on yourself if you fall short. Celebrate and savor the small achievements and enjoy every day! Don’t sweat the small stuff!
